Modest Monday: Thoughts on the Heart of the Matter

Ever hear the words "my heart is modest and that's what really matters"? or "as long as my heart is in the right place nothing else really matters"? The reasoning behind such statements is that "the Lord looketh on the heart" which is what we read in 1 Samuel 16:7.

In my personal journey to modesty, this verse bothered me, stumped me and caused me to use these words as an excuse to dress how I wanted to....doesn't it say that "the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart"?

Deep down in my heart I knew that I was wrong...but my heart desired to go my own way and now I even had scripture to back me up!

The Christian life...is it being or doing?

These kinds of statements sound spiritual...."well, I'm focused on being who God wants me to be on the inside, than merely doing things for God on the outside!"

The answer that is found in Scripture is undeniable! It is both!

The same God who "looketh on the heart" is the same God who said "Thou shalt not...".

We live in a day when Christians seem to want to reason away "undesirable" lifestyle expectations of God under the guise of grace.

This thinking is flawed...this thinking is the smokescreen of Satan.

If you desire to truly know the God of the Bible and please him you are going to have to be concerned with your heart AND your lifestyle!

God most definitely is first concerned with our hearts. But He doesn't stop there.

From a right heart will come a right lifestyle....you cannot separate the two!

If you do, you are basically ignoring 50% of the teachings of God!

I'm so thankful that Satan didn't win this victory in my life!

I'm so grateful for a God who in love and mercy didn't let me go.

I'm so thankful that He made His way plain and clear so that I could understand!

This dress has got to be the easiest and simplest outfit for Sunday and so very comfortable! I know it is going to be one of my favourites! This dress was bought through my local MiSH store but can be found online at Neeses Dresses....one of my favourite places to shop!

Thoughts shared above were taken from the book Different by Design by Cary Schmidt....although I applied them specifically to modesty and my journey, this book has been the best explanation I have ever found on this matter of the heart.

Have a great day!

  2. Yes, our faith is shown through our life. Scripture says to "be Ye Holy as He is Holy". Our wardrobe would certainly come into play here along with the many verses clearly written about modesty.... Thank you for linking this week at the Art of Home-Making Mondays at Strangers & Pilgrims on Earth! :)
